Startup Spotlight: Pula

Pula is a company that creates and provides agricultural insurance and digital products to help small-scale farmers manage crop risks, improve their farming methods, and increase their incomes.

Pula’s president, Rose Goslinga, co-founded the company in 2015. The company aims to provide affordable insurance solutions to smallholder farmers. To date, it has insured over 20.9 million farmers across 22 countries.

Pula has received notable recognition, including being named among the World Economic Forum’s top 100 global tech pioneers and awarded the top InsurTech Innovator for 2021. The company was also the first beneficiary of the GBP 200mn Climate Innovation Facility launched by the CDC Group.

Pula has worked with WFP for over three years to offer crop insurance to farmers in Kitui, Kenya. During this time, the program grew from 1,000 to about 10,000 insured farmers, with US$766,000 in crop loss compensation paid out.

In 2020, Pula worked with the Central Bank of Nigeria to insure about 543,000 farmers for the wet season.

Pula’s approach has significantly promoted agricultural insurance, improving the lives of African farmers.
