Project Manager vs Scrum Master

Miracle Okah |

While project managers and scrum masters can take on both roles, they are different. They both play important roles in product development and ensure that products meet customer needs and are delivered efficiently. Now, what makes them different?

A Project Manager oversees the entire project lifecycle from start to finish. They are responsible for planning, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, project scope, timeline, budget, and quality.

The project manager ensures the success of a project, stakeholder satisfaction, and team performance while mitigating risks and creating community plans.

On the other hand, a Scrum master facilitates the scrum framework within a specific team or project. They ensure that scrum principles, practices, and values are followed while facilitating sprint planning, daily stand-up, and sprint review. Not only this, scrum master coaches team members on Scrum and Agile principles and helps foster collaboration and continuous improvement.

What is Scrum?

You might be wondering what scrum is; scrum is a collaborative project management framework that enables teams to deliver high-quality products in rapidly changing environments. It combines fundamental Agile principles with a simple yet powerful set of practices to help teams deliver working software in short cycles called Sprints.

The main difference between the project manager and the scrum master is their scope, methodology, and responsibilities. The project manager has a broader scope that includes the entire project, while the scrum master focuses on a specific team or project within the scrum framework. Project managers may use traditional or agile methodologies, whereas the scrum master is dedicated to scrum. Lastly, the project manager oversees project planning, budgeting, and resource allocation, while the scrum master focuses on facilitating scrum processes and team collaboration.
